From Climate Research to Public Dialogue

From Climate Research to Public Dialogue: The Science Communication at the University of Aveiro

The University of Aveiro (UA) has developed a diverse science communication ecosystem that connects academic research with society. This ecosystem comprises news articles, audiovisual storytelling, podcasts, and participatory science experiences. By translating scientific knowledge into more accessible formats, the institution contributes to a stronger public understanding of sustainability, biodiversity, technological innovation, and climate-related challenges.

    Why science communication matters

Climate change, sustainability, biodiversity loss, and technological transformation require informed public debate. Universities play a crucial role not only in producing knowledge but also in making scientific evidence understandable and relevant to society. Effective communication helps bridge the gap between researchers, journalists, and citizens — a central objective of climate communication initiatives such as Media for Future.

+Ciência: bringing research closer to citizens

+Ciência is a science communication initiative developed by the University of Aveiro, to promote public engagement with research and innovation.

The project highlights researchers, discoveries, and scientific projects taking place at the university. Topics frequently include biodiversity, environmental systems, sustainability, and technological innovation. By combining news articles, short videos, podcast episodes, and research highlights, the initiative enables scientists to explain their work in accessible language, helping audiences understand complex topics beyond academic contexts. +Ciência also humanises science by showing not only research outcomes but also the people behind scientific discovery.

Videos are available on the YouTube platform: +Ciência (You Tube)

    Podcast (des)complica: science through conversation

The UA podcast (des)complica complements audiovisual communication with longer and more reflective discussions. Episodes explore topics related to science, health, education, sustainability, technology, and innovation. Researchers and experts discuss complex issues in a conversational and accessible format, allowing audiences to engage more deeply with scientific themes and encouraging reflection and public dialogue.

Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva: learning science by experiencing it

Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva de Aveiro extends science communication beyond digital media and into hands-on public engagement. Developed by the University of Aveiro in partnership with Ciência Viva, the centre promotes scientific culture through participation and experimentation.

Activities include interactive exhibitions, laboratory experiences, science theatre, robotics, holography, workshops, and educational programmes for schools and families.

Rather than simply explaining science, Fábrica enables citizens to experience it directly through practical interaction. This approach is particularly relevant to sustainability and climate literacy, making scientific concepts more tangible, and easier to understand.
