At COP30, Amazon Rainforest Is Center Stage for Climate Catastrophe

The article highlights that the Amazon rainforest occupies a central role in the discussions of COP30, held in Belém, Brazil, due to the severity of the environmental crisis it faces. Traditionally known as one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet, the Amazon is currently experiencing an alarming combination of intense deforestation, fires caused by human activity, and prolonged droughts, exacerbated by climate change. These factors jeopardize its capacity to absorb CO₂, and there is evidence that parts of the forest are already emitting more carbon than they can retain.
